PM Modi’s Indonesia Visit Brings Ancient 1,170-Year-Old Shiva Temple Into Global Spotlight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Indonesia visit has brought global attention to the 1,170-year-old Shiva Temple at Prambanan. The ancient Hindu monument reflects the deep cultural connection between India and Indonesia, featuring Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma temples, Sanskrit inscriptions, Ramayana carvings and UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia has once again brought global attention to the country’s remarkable Hindu heritage, highlighting the centuries-old cultural connection between India and Indonesia. Although Indonesia is a Muslim-majority nation and remains a popular destination among Indian tourists, its ancient Hindu traditions continue to exist with great pride and significance.

The 1,170-year-old Shiva Temple located in Prambanan, Indonesia, has emerged as a major point of discussion worldwide. The magnificent temple stands as a historic symbol of the deep roots of Indian culture and Hindu traditions that flourished in the region centuries ago.

A major question surrounding Indonesia’s Hindu heritage is how Hinduism reached a Muslim-majority country. According to information shared by the YouTube channel Defence Watch Hindi, the arrival of Hindu culture in Indonesia is linked to Indian traders. Indian merchants travelled to Indonesia for trading spices, textiles, gold and silver, and through these exchanges, Hindu traditions and cultural practices also reached the region.

Ancient Indian religious texts described kings as divine representatives, an idea that reportedly influenced Indonesian rulers. Several Indonesian kings adopted similar concepts and invited Brahmins from India to serve as advisors. Over time, Hindu religion and Indian cultural traditions established strong roots across Indonesia.

According to the legend, a prince wanted to marry a princess, but she placed a condition that he must build 1,000 temples in a single night before their marriage could take place. The exact origin of the story remains unknown, but it became associated with the ancient temple complex.

The construction of the Prambanan Shiva Temple began in the ninth century under Sanjaya Dynasty ruler Rakai Pikatan. Later rulers modified, expanded and developed the temple complex according to their own traditions. Excavations conducted during the 19th and 20th centuries uncovered several remains, including Sanskrit inscriptions carved on temple walls and stones. These inscriptions contained names and dates, confirming that the structure was dedicated to Lord Shiva and dates back more than 1,100 years.

Located on Java Island, the Prambanan Temple complex is considered one of the most remarkable examples of Hindu architectural heritage outside India.

The temple is not limited to Lord Shiva alone. It also includes temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, which is why the complex is known as the Trimurti Temple. The temple complex consists of around 250 temples, with the tallest Shiva Temple reaching approximately 47 metres in height. The Vishnu Temple is located on one side, while the Brahma Temple stands on the other side.

The walls of the temple feature detailed stone carvings depicting the complete story of the Ramayana, reflecting the influence of Indian mythology and cultural traditions in Indonesia.

The Prambanan Temple complex underwent major restoration efforts in the 20th century. The Dutch government restarted reconstruction work using the anastylosis technique, in which scattered stones were carefully matched and reassembled to restore the original structure. After Indonesia gained independence, the government continued the restoration process, and the temple was fully completed in 1953.

In 1991, UNESCO declared the entire Prambanan Temple complex a World Heritage Site, recognising its exceptional cultural and historical importance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Indonesia visit has once again highlighted the centuries-old civilisational connection between India and Indonesia. The ancient Shiva Temple of Prambanan continues to stand as a powerful symbol of shared heritage, architectural excellence and the enduring influence of Hindu culture beyond India’s borders.
